Installing a GPS Tracker: Step-by-Step Guide
Installing a GPS tracker in your vehicle is easier than you might think. This guide covers both installation methods: the simple OBD-II plug-in approach and the more permanent hardwired installation.
Before You Start: Choose Your Tracker Type
- OBD-II plug-in trackers — No tools required. Plug into the OBD-II port and you're done.
- Hardwired GPS trackers — Connected to the vehicle's electrical system. More discreet and tamper-resistant, but requires basic wiring knowledge or a professional installer.
Method 1: Installing an OBD-II GPS Tracker
OBD-II trackers like the FMM00A OBD-II Tracker and Teltonika FMC003 are the easiest to install.
What You'll Need
- Your OBD-II GPS tracker
- A smartphone or computer to set up the tracking platform
Step-by-Step
- Locate the OBD-II port. In most Australian vehicles, it's under the dashboard on the driver's side near the steering column — a 16-pin trapezoidal connector.
- Turn off the ignition. Good practice before plugging in.
- Plug in the tracker. Insert firmly until it clicks into place.
- Turn on the ignition. The tracker powers up automatically.
- Activate on the platform. Log into your tracking platform, add the device using its IMEI number, and confirm it's transmitting.
- Test it. Drive around the block and confirm location updates correctly.
Tip: Some trackers have a sleep mode to reduce battery drain when the vehicle is parked.
Method 2: Installing a Hardwired GPS Tracker
Hardwired trackers like the Techtonika FMC920 or FMM920 are connected directly to the vehicle's electrical system for a permanent, hidden installation.
What You'll Need
- Your hardwired GPS tracker
- Wire strippers and crimping tool
- Electrical tape or heat shrink tubing
- Multimeter (optional but recommended)
- Zip ties for cable management
Step-by-Step
- Choose a mounting location. Common spots include behind the dashboard, under a seat, or in the boot. Avoid locations that block GPS signal (e.g., under metal panels). The tracker needs a clear line of sight to the sky for best GPS performance.
- Identify your wiring points. You'll need to connect to three wires: constant 12V power (always on), ignition-switched power (on when ignition is on), and ground. Use a multimeter to confirm which wires are which.
- Connect the power wires. Strip a small section of insulation from each wire. Connect the tracker's red wire to constant 12V, the yellow wire to ignition-switched power, and the black wire to ground. Use crimp connectors or solder and heat shrink for a secure connection.
- Mount the tracker. Secure the device with zip ties or double-sided tape. Ensure it's stable and won't rattle.
- Route and tidy the cables. Use zip ties to secure cables away from moving parts and heat sources.
- Test before closing up. Turn on the ignition and confirm the tracker powers up and transmits location data on your platform before reassembling any panels.
- Reassemble. Replace any panels or trim you removed during installation.
Professional installation tip: If you're not comfortable with vehicle wiring, we recommend having a professional auto electrician install your hardwired tracker. This ensures a clean, reliable installation and protects your vehicle's warranty.
Best Placement for GPS Signal
GPS signals are blocked by metal but pass through glass and plastic. For best performance:
- Mount the tracker horizontally with the antenna facing upward
- Avoid placing it directly under thick metal panels
- Under the dashboard (facing up) or near the rear window are common good locations
After Installation: Setting Up Your Tracking Platform
Once your tracker is installed and powered, you'll need to configure it on a tracking platform. Most Techtonika trackers are compatible with platforms like Wialon, Navixy, and others. You'll need your device's IMEI number and a SIM card with a data plan.
